I made a mistake! Somehow, while I was still composing my thoughts, I accidentally posted the drafted beginning of a blog entry, and it was seen by people… and I feel a little… naked. (Yikes!!!)
Fortunately, blog posts can be moved back to “Draft” (who knew, and Hooray!!!), so you will see a better version of the story you may have started reading and thought, “Hm… This does not seem to have a true ending” because… well, it is not yet finished! I’ll get those thoughts corralled and edited, and out to you all soon. Thank you kindly for your understanding while I remove, edit, and complete that entry.
Today, I want to share with you the run I had the pleasure of going on with my friends (nice and early to beat the heat) on Sunday. We started at a track, quickly made it to a trail for an intensely UPHILL climb, we passed the Zoo, and the beautiful Rose Garden, and made our way back into the city to finish our gorgeous, wooded, challenging, and fun run.

Toward the end, we may have gotten a little silly.

All in all, this being my first eight mile run experience in over three months, it was great! Although my quads felt like they wanted to remove themselves from my body and take a nap nearing the last half mile after all that up and down, I really, really enjoyed this run.
And spending time with those wonderful women.

What is the goofiest thing you’ve done during a workout?
After a long break from running and exercise – any serious movement – after being sick for a whole week, I was thrilled to have a cool, clear, crisp morning to get outside and Run! With this new year, I am starting at square one, so I went out for a two-mile run. Short and sweet, and absolutely stunning!
It was such a beautiful morning. I couldn’t have asked this fair city for better sunshine, temperature, or reflections.
I am so happy to be running again!
Tomorrow commences Saturday runs with my running buddies. It has been far too long since I spent the mornings chatting and laughing and pounding out the miles with those lovely ladies. I look forward to another beautiful run, and a few more miles, tomorrow.

Well, I don’t exactly mean that literally, but this was the last marathon distance run I will complete before running the Siskiyou Outback 50k at the end of this month. And I can tell you very plainly – I am ready for the taper.
I laid in bed for an extra hour this morning debating pros and cons of an early run, and trying to convince myself that I wanted to get up, throw on my shoes, and go run up some major hills in the forest. And even after a small breakfast and some coffee, my body and brain both responded a resounding: ‘No F-ing way!’ (My eyelids slowly drooping back to the closed position post-breakfast, after I found myself, once again, lying on my bed).
Today, I am exhausted. It is my last day of high-volume running, and now my time on the trail (for the marathon follow-up of ten miles) is moved from this morning to an evening adventure (once it is no longer nearly 90 degrees outside). I was pretty useless until about noon, when I stopped reading and social-media flipping to cook a real meal because my stomach was growling. Perhaps that small breakfast is good on normal days, but it is possible my body required a little more caloric intake today to feel fully prepared to do … anything.
Running 26 miles, I am learning, is (quite understandably) taxing. Each time I run that distance, I somehow manage to forget how much time my body wants post-run to simply rest. And eat. And eat again. Surprisingly, the actual act of running has become much easier. 26 miles feels like what 12 miles did a year ago, and 12 miles is no longer a daunting figure having become a routine training run that is reminiscent to how 5 miles affect me one year ago.
The body adapts, and truthfully, the amount of recovery time is likewise reduced for these long runs; I now feel much better at 4 o’clock in the afternoon the day after my marathon run, whereas after the St. George Marathon last year, I went out for a very short 1.5 mile jog-hop the day after my race and three days post-race I was still sore and waiting to feel “normal” again. It’s almost unfathomable – I will run 10 miles today after 26 yesterday.
…How did I get here?
When did running for a couple of hours become “the norm”?
My running buddy and I discussed this ‘funny’ notion while out tackling hills in yesterday’s sunshine. Saturday morning really was perfect for a long, long, Long run. 🙂
I am so grateful and feel blessed that I get to spend great portions of these long distance Saturday mornings with good friends to share stories, encourage each other, and generally make the workout a really good time.
A big shout-out to my running buddies (near and far) & Saturday’s Run group: Thank you SO much for being runners. My life would not be the same without each and every one of you.

Saturday my friends chose a challenging run full of hills. Or one really long hill. Starting from the flat lands of the close-in East side of Hawthorne across the bridge, through downtown, up Washington Park, and finishing (the first half of the run) at the top of the Portland Zoo parking lot. The morning was surprisingly cloudy and cool. I had been watching the weather forecast all week, anticipating the weekend’s delightful sunshine, but the little yellow ball of glowing happiness kept moving to the right, just one more day… every day. As a native Oregonian, I suppose I should not be surprised by the peek-a-boo sunshine, especially since we have not yet reached the glorious Fourth of July after which Summer officially begins in Portland. (We’re almost there!!! Can you feel it??)
The path of great gains in elevation lead us past the well-known International Rose Test Garden, wherein visitors can gain a pretty perspective of downtown cityscapes while filling their noses with Eau de Rose Varieties. (These roses smell so good!)
We learned that bunny rabbits have a strong affinity for the rose petals, as well, but they find them much more edible than most of us humans.
I am so grateful that we went out and trekked our way up this never-ending hill. It inspired me to endeavor to conquer more aggressive hills, on trials, with rocks and tree-roots, and mud (more on this soon). I have resolved to make at least one of my weekday run adventures on dirt, with many hills. With the Siskiyou Outback quickly approaching, I need to get a little more serious about proper true hilly trail running.

The last few months have been a little frustrating. I have found myself both loathing running and relishing the time spent solo, pounding the pavement. My body has definitely adapted to the increased mileage on the weekends, yet I still find myself lacking the energy to get up and go on weekdays. My new secret weapon for the long run is major carbs Friday night. I tend to have a fairly simple diet of protein, fruits, and veggies, and over the last few weeks have found in order to keep up energy and stamina, I apparently need to add a few more calories than my normal diet provides. (Who am I kidding? When you burn an extra 3000-5000 calories per week, of course you need to eat more!)
I guess there is an adjustment period to learning exactly how to eat MORE food. (As I write this at 10:30pm, my stomach is growling… Time to have a late night snack!) Before the Newport Marathon I was baking bread for snacking on, and I think it may be time to do so again. This coming weekend is conveniently another 36 mile weekend, and our famous fireworks holiday. I plan to go to bed very shortly after all the loud popping noises cease. 🙂

Twenty-one days ago, I ran the Newport Marathon. With joy in my heart, and a skip in my step, I moved my way over those 26.2 miles with a smile.
After returning from my little vacation to Vegas and LA, three days later to driving to the coast to spend the weekend at the beach running the Newport Marathon, I was completely prepared for a calm, quiet week (and weekend) at home. Monday and Tuesday passed uneventfully, I even signed up for an online workshop on Creative Visualization for Wednesday evening. Much to my surprise, I received a text from my sister – she was at the hospital… and going to have a baby! And there went my quiet, relaxing week…!
After a long evening, and an even longer morning, watching, helping, and cheering my sister on, my niece came into the world at 5:55am. She is amazing. The most adorable newborn I have ever seen – and her mother was incredible. I did not know what to expect watching her go through this process, and beyond being one of the most amazing experiences to be present for – watching a life coming into the world – I saw strength and bravery in my sister that was simply awe-inspiring.
Needless to say, after a sleepless night, I slept a little that morning, worked the afternoon, and crashed Thursday night. Friday they went home, and I spent time each day this past weekend with my sister and brother-in-law and my little niece. Sunday morning, I woke up thinking “why does it feel like I haven’t had a weekend at home in weeks…?” Well… three weekends, not at home, Alaina. That’s your answer.
And somehow, three weeks after my last race, without missing a beat or losing my stride, I am continuing on – training for another race. A bigger race. An Ultra. 50 Kilometers somewhere up on some mountain in Southern Oregon. I might die. But chances are, if I train enough and don’t hurt myself, I’ll end up having a lot of fun on the Siskiyou Outback. And I’ll get to see my friends from the Newport Marathon! As well as see my very good friend Cass, whom I have not seen in so long (and I am sure she will totally kick my butt in this race).
Today was my first ever 26 mile training run. TRAINING! It is so weird to think that today, I ran a marathon… and it wasn’t a race. Ha! Who knew I would ever reach this point. The cool thing is, if it had been a marathon, it would have been a PR! I clocked in at 4:40 for today’s run, and after a marathon three weeks ago that was 5:02, that feels pretty good. Oh, and it was beautiful. And I am sunburned. (oops, forgot sunblock…)
My run was perfectly lovely – 10 miles solo to start at 6:15, the next 5 miles with my girlfriends, peaking around garage sales in the neighborhood, another 4.5 miles solo, and the last 6.5 with my Mom. We finished with brunch at a little breakfast diner in Sellwood, and then headed back to garage sale for good deals! This day leaves me feeling extremely satisfied… and exhausted!
Tomorrow I have the pleasure of running with a friend from high school – I anticipate great conversation which should make 10 pretty easy… (Can 10 miles be easy the day after 26? Here’s hoping…!) Then it’s a baby visit day. So excited to snuggle that little one again! I still can’t believe I’m an Auntie!!!

But I had to share with you – I am so excited to be running the Newport Marathon with my Grampa. We had a lovely drive out to the coast, and a wonderful dinner where we met a lovely girl who lives in the first building I called home in NW Portland! In the same unit one floor down! We live in a a small world, full of surprises.
The drive out was gorgeous: blue skies, old barns, and grand views of the ocean.

Saturday morning was one of those, when you just don’t want to drag yourself out of bed and hit the road… A morning when the desire to pull the covers over your head and turn off the alarm and just sleep until you wake up naturally from thirst or hunger is all you want…
But despite your reluctance, you get up, get out, and run.
And it was a beautiful morning, full of dynamic clouds, catching up with friends, and taking a trip across the top deck of the Steel Bridge on foot for the first time in my Portland life. Turns out, the view from up there is pretty nice.
I am so grateful to live in such an inspiringly beautiful city. She makes early morning long runs… easy. 🙂
This morning was quite the treat – the Saturday Run group met at one of our favorite spots: Leif Erickson Trailhead at the top of Thurman to do a trail run. This run was unique because we ran the entire length of the trail. A first for us all, I was thrilled to have the opportunity to view some new scenery. The farthest distance I have run out this trial was to mile marker 6 (a total of twelve miles out-and-back). Today’s trip was an uphill run, out one-way. Grey, cloudy, and toward the end of the run, a bit rainy. I think the moisture only enhanced the greenery around us, filling the air with soft pitter-pats of rain soaking into the ground, the calming scent of Earth, and helping us to feel more connected and alive in the outdoors.
This was my longest run since last year’s St George Marathon, and it felt good to get out and do some extra mileage. With another marathon coming up in May, I am starting to feel the need to be more strict with my training schedule, as I have yet to fully commit to running 20+ miles per week. When I think back on last year’s training schedule, the time commitment sounds significant when I add up the hours, but since I ran before work on weekdays, it felt less so because I was done with the required mileage before I even started the work-day. How do you manage marathon training?
Next week is the Shamrock Run! I have signed up for this race two times previously, and been unable to attend the actual event. This year, I am looking forward to tackling the 15k on the Terwilliger hill, and joining in the sea of runners dressed in Kelly Green, embellished with Shamrocks. Will I see any of you out on the road next Sunday?
On another note, today is a very special post for me – this is my 101st post! Never did I imagine that I would be able to keep writing about running for so long. I have discovered running is a pretty interesting sport, with many sights worth seeing, places to explore, and distances to conquer! I want to thank all of you for reading and responding to these entries; not only has this been a great outlet for writing and sharing the beauty I see while getting distance under my belt, I have also made some great connections with like-minded folk near and far. I am humbled to know that there are 100 of my friends, family, and acquaintances who choose to read the words on these pages. You inspire me to keep writing, and I cannot thank you enough for that gift.
Saturday morning I awoke to the most colorful, layered sunrise sky I have seen from my new apartment (I apologize for not capturing that gloriousness in a photo – will do next time!). For some unknown reason, I sat up with a start early-ish this lovely weekend morning. Perhaps because the time was 7am and my body usually experiences the 6am wake-up alarm of the M-F routine, or because Saturdays are reserved for the group run, which commences promptly at 8am, and a little worry may have crept into my sleeping brain that I might soon be missing something important.
Last weekend, Saturday’s agenda took an unusual path. I was meeting my sister for breakfast in the suburbs, and going to a baby shower a little farther yet from home. And I was nervous. Why, you ask? Because I was driving outside of the city…
To most people, this will seem a little dramatic. But to tell you the truth, I was a little terrified. I have only had my driver’s license for a little over a year, and a car to drive for less than three months. (Yes, I am a grown adult and nearly 32 years of age – I’m just a little late to jump into the vehicle game).
…and I had NEVER driven on the freeway alone…
I knew the easiest, and most time effective, method of getting to my destination meant driving on one of those multi-lane, 50 mph and faster highways with crazy people speeding, merging, and darting around me. I was…
My morning progressed slowly, meaning by the time I walked out my door, I was running late, and since the back roads were going to take about 26 minutes, I needed to save myself ten minutes and take the highway. So I sucked it up, got in my car, and drove right onto the highway ramp. I drove my little car down the big, scary road, and you know what? It really wasn’t that bad, after all.
Also, I am eternally grateful for the little voice in my phone that tells me where to go. (Thank you Apple!)
I had a lovely breakfast with my sister, we discussed baby shower details – Yes, I am going to be an Auntie! – and then we decided to wander and shop at a surprisingly nearby mall. (There is a possibility I have missed this from my teen years). It’s incredible how close things become when you can drive to different locations in mere minutes.
New adorable flats in hand (the Jeffrey Campbell “In Love” flats – a la Miss Meers, my favorite shoe boutique from the college years), I hugged my sis and was off to a friend’s baby shower. We played games, munched on some delicious food, and guessed if the baby was a pink bow or a blue bow. They had been keeping their little one’s gender secret for many weeks… and the reveal came just three and a half weeks before baby is expected! I picked a pink bow to pin to the board, and … I guessed right! Woohoo! (Yes, I am very proud of guessing correctly – two of three recent births… one still TBD). I am very excited for this little person to join the lives of my good friend and her husband, and can’t wait to meet her!
After all the congratulating and asking to be notified of when and how it goes, we all left in our vehicles… I was excited to get home and get to my run!
I really wanted to catch the view of Portland before the sun set, and since I was heading out the door after 5pm, I knew I had little time. Choosing to take the most direct route to my favorite overlook of the city, I went straight up the hill… as fast as I could without making myself sick, that is. And the view was lovely, of course.
On my way back down the hill, and toward the waterfront, the sky turned red…
Once I reached the waterfront, the sun was fading from the sky, and night began to envelop the city. A blue hue fell over the water and clouds. I was greeted by a very large flock of birds floating near the water’s edge.
The night was beautiful. Dry, quiet, and water so still; a mirror reflecting the city back upon herself. Dazzling even to those who hadn’t just run eight miles, I’d wager.
In the next few weeks, I will be increasing again, training for the Newport Marathon. It’s crazy how quickly these dates catch up to us – this marathon at the end of May will be my “longest run” (or one of my longest runs) in preparation for a 50K in July – The Siskiyou Outback. Part of me can not believe I have chosen to challenge my mind and body in that race, the other part is thoroughly excited. 🙂
A shorter race is upcoming before these two long races. In March, I’ll be tackling the Shamrock with a bunch of friends, running the 15K. I have never actually run in this race, despite having registered on two separate previous occasions. I look forward to finally running amidst all the green attire and silly Leprechaun get-ups. Thinking about this race, I’m wondering if I should have some kind of strategy for race day. I’d love to hear from you – how do you plan for race-day? What is your strategy?

Last night, as I went to bed, I decided to let myself sleep in as long as my body would let me, regardless of the fact that Saturday is traditionally the group long run day. Of course, I woke up promptly at 7am and decided at twenty after I would throw my clothes on and run out the door to meet my friends on foot at 8am… two miles away, for an eight mile run. In the snow.
Fortunately, I made it on time, and I am so happy I got out of bed to meet them – It had snowed again overnight, there was hardly any traffic, and it was gorgeous.
Toward the end of our run, it really started snowing heavily. I had a wonderful time walking home through all the white flakes of fluff.
We were lucky to have one more day of glorious snow; we are currently experiencing freezing rain, and it seems the conditions tomorrow will be best suited for staying indoors.
